What is oncare.wien?
The name oncare-wien is a word coined with the following thoughts about service in mind:
The Wiener Gesundheitsverbund has introduced the oncare.wien project, together with the Vienna Cancer Center and the City of Vienna, to achieve substantial improvements for you as a patient, for your attending physician and for the hospitals. Within the shortest possible timeframe (1-10 workdays) you will now get an appointment for your initial oncology consultation visit at one of the hospitals of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund allocated according to your diagnosis and home address.
How did oncare.wien come about?
Previous situation
oncare.wien is intended to improve the situation for patients. Before oncare.wien was launched, it had often been very complicated for you to get an initial hospital appointment and to begin your treatment following an oncology diagnosis. Frequently it was up to you as a patient to select an appropriate hospital, in itself not an easy task given the high number of different clinics and their varying specialisations. This led to some hospitals receiving more inquiries from patients than others and resulting in longer waiting periods for initial appointments.
What is new
On behalf of the State Target Control Commission and the Vienna Health Fund, the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund has introduced the oncare.wien project, together with the Vienna Cancer Center and the City of Vienna, to achieve substantial improvements for you as a patient, for your attending physician and for the hospitals.
You will now get within 10 workdays an appointment for your initial oncology consultation visit at one of the hospitals of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund allocated according to your diagnosis and home address. Medically trained staff of oncare.wien chooses the best possible hospital and assigns the appointments for patients. In so doing, oncare.wien ensures that patients receive the best possible treatment of their oncological illness. Furthermore, you may use the specially developed platform of oncare.wien to view your medical data and (the progress of) your appointment arrangements or obtain information via our service number +43 1 1450 (Mondays through Fridays – 08:00 – 18:00).
Which hospitals are part of oncare.wien?
All 8 hospitals of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund are part of oncare.wien. Patients whose principal place of residence is in Vienna will be allocated to the best-suited hospital for treatment depending on their diagnosis. Patients with rare oncology diagnoses will also be allocated by oncare.wien to a Vienna hospital even if they live outside of Vienna. Patients outside of Vienna who suffer from ‘standard diseases’ will be allocated to hospitals in Lower Austria or Burgenland. If you have any further questions please call +43 1 1450.
Who at oncare.wien is involved in taking you along the steps towards arranging an appointment?
At oncare.wien, doctors are responsible for initiating the process of arranging your initial appointment. If you have an oncology diagnosis, your medical data will be recorded and immediately communicated to medically trained staff, research study assistants and tumour board assistants.
Qualified health and nursing care personnel with special knowledge in oncology is tasked with inspecting and categorising the medical data of all registered patients. Based on the diagnosis and the defined guidelines, they select the best possible place to look after patients.
Research study assistants specialised in oncology will also inspect your medical data and check whether they might be suited for enrolment in an oncology study. By participating in a clinical study, patients help achieve scientific progress towards optimising the modes of treatment in oncology. Participation, of course, requires your consent.
Tumour board assistants see to it that actual cases of illness are submitted to a tumour board if the attending physician so requests. A tumour board is a network of doctors from different disciplines who examine actual cases of illness from different angles and recommend to your attending physician a suitable form of treatment for you.
Service Center staff are in direct contact with patients and oncology departments. They arrange appointments at the selected oncology departments for you as a patient. In addition, they answer any questions concerning oncare.wien.
Oncology departments admit patients for initial consultation visits / outpatient treatments.
