Following the diagnosis of cancer, many patients have no place to turn. Often they embark on a very bureaucratic journey. First of all, they need to arrange an appointment to initiate treatment.
In order to facilitate this process for patients and doctors, the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund, the Vienna Cancer Center and the City of Vienna have launched the oncare.wien project on behalf of the State Target Control Commission and the Vienna Health Fund. Under this project, medically trained and qualified staff organise an initial appointment for patients at a hospital of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund that is close to the patients’ home address.
Optimise patient distribution among hospitals
Frequently, patients appear to be allocated to certain hospitals by chance. This may happen due to positive experiences in the past or to personal contacts, often leading to an unequal distribution of cases in the various hospitals of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund. Through oncare.wien, patients are systematically distributed among hospitals resulting in the process leading up to the initial appointment in an oncology department being accelerated.
This is the starting point for oncare.wien:
With its medically trained and qualified staff, oncare.wien supports patients on their path towards treatment. The platform helps initiate the best possible treatment at a hospital of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund for patients living in Vienna, and this is done within 10 workdays. For this purpose, clearly defined criteria based on the patients’ diagnosis and home address are used. Patients with rare oncology diagnoses will also be allocated by oncare.wien to a Vienna hospital even if they live outside of Vienna. Patients from outside of Vienna who suffer from ‘standard diseases’ will be allocated to hospitals in Lower Austria or Burgenland.
